Emergency Preparedness and Food Storage

Here is a quick and easy family activity that we all should complete every six months. Ensuring families have the necessities to survive if a disaster occurs is essential. Although it may not be “fun” this activity can help Mom’s and Dad’s feel better about the preparedness of the family. Choose any combination of the following ideas, they can all be accomplished in one night or they can be spread out and completed each quarter.

  • If you don’t have any food storage start with a 72 hour kit, the Red Cross has an example here. Building your 72 hour kit would be an awesome family activity.
  • Once you have a 72 hour kit for each family member consider a 3 month food storage containing enough food to sustain your family for 3 months.
  • Once your 3 month storage is built consider growing it to 6 months and then a year.
  • Every family needs a communication plan. The Red Cross provides one solution here.
  • Develop a family evacuation plan. Practice evacuating your home, this would be free and fun.
  • Rotation – Rotate your food storage. My wife informed me that wheat has an expiration date, who knew.
  • Review a site like ReadyAndPrepared.com to form more ideas about preparedness

Emergency preparedness offers families many ways to have fun together. Ideas like the evacuation plan are free and fun to practice.
