I had the chance to take my scout troop camping this past weekend. Camping in early January or February is difficult as many local improved campgrounds don’t open their doors until later in February. After calling the public lands information center I discovered that the only local improved area was Diamond campground located up Spanish Fork Canyon. In addition to being open year round, Diamond campground is also free during the winter months.
We arrived later in the evening than expected, however setting up our tents via headlight can be fun. The temperature this weekend was mild, we did wake up to about 3 inches of snow in the morning. Be aware the roads into the various loops for camping were snow-packed. I was driving a small 2 door front wheel drive car and did fine, however we also had a four wheel drive vehicle.
It was a fun outing, and recommended for anyone. You can find the link to the campground here or a Google map here.

Please note open fires were allowed, as long as they were in the above ground fire pits. The pits were a little damp, however fires could be quickly created.
HI THERE, I AM ALSO A SCOUTMASTER LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO TAKE THE BOYS IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. WAS THIS AREA CROWDED,AND CAN WE GET A SMALL SCOUT TRAILOR IN. THANKS
Hello Kelly,
We went on a Friday night and were the only people in the whole site. I would assume not many folks like to camp in the snow. The roads were cleared the 5 miles up diamond road, however they were not clear heading down into the camp site. With that said my little 2 wheel driver car did just fine. I would see no problems getting a small trailer in and out. Hope this helps!
